Cupping is a technique involving the use of small plastic cups as suction devices placed on the skin. The suction causes the skin and superficial muscle layers to be drawn into the cup which helps to loosen muscles, encourage blood flow and sedate the nervous system leaving you feeling very relaxed. Cups are generally left in place for 10-15 minutes and often times will leave a mark on the skin which is a useful diagnostic tool for the acupuncturist.
Moxibustion (moxa) is a technique our acupuncturists use which entails burning the herb Mugwort (ai ye) over certain acupuncture points or areas of the body. In Chinese medical terms it is predominantly used to move qi and blood which translates in the west to treating pain disorders.
Gua sha is a technique that involves repeated pressured strokes over lubricated skin with a smooth edged instrument. Studies have shown a 400% increase in surface circulation of blood following a gua sha treatment that tends to produce light bruising, which is good news! This bruising indicates a cascade of anti-inflammatory and immune responses are taking place ultimately providing not only significant pain relief but a sense of well being.
